What is an IP Phone?
An IP phone can operate on a simple software program, in which case it is called a softphone, or it can operate with a purpose-built hardware device that, for all intence and purposes, looks exactly like a conventional telephone or a wireless phone. The purpose of the IP phone is to allow VoIP calls to be made inexpensively and efficiently over an IP network like the Internet (rather than the ordinary PSTN system), or through a private business IP network.
An IP phone consists of a keypad or touch pad with which the caller enters the phone number and text, just like with a conventional telephone. It has a speaker and usually an ear phone and microphone. The phone has display hardware the processes the messages from the VoIP application. It has ADC and DAC converters that are used to convert voice to digital data that can be transmitted through the Internet.
The Internet phone has a multitude of purposes in businesses small and large. The Internet phone comes with certain standard features that can help businesses manage their customer interactions and help business while saving the company considerable amounts of money over conventional telephone systems. For example, it is common for the VoIP phone to come equipped with caller ID, so the company can determine ahead of time who is calling. The typical IP phone will also have network-based and local directories that can assist callers in quickly and easily finding their desired extensions. Conference calling is also a feature that is usually standard on the IP phone. This is one of the best features offered on the Internet phone because again, the company can save money. In this instance, they can save on travel expenses for employees who might normally have to fly in for the conference. VoIP lets people confer from any location that has high speed Internet.
